The Name

Named after an 11th-century Persian genius

“The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ,
Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line,
Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it.”

— Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, trans. Edward FitzGerald

Omar Khayyam (1048–1131) was a Persian mathematician, astronomer, and poet. He solved cubic equations geometrically with compass and conic sections — centuries before Europe. He reformed the Persian solar calendar into the Jalali calendar, still more accurate than the Gregorian. The compass in the app icon references both: the astronomer measuring the stars, and the geometer drawing the proof.

FAQ

Common questions

Is Khayyam PDF Editor really free?+
Yes — free for personal use with no time limit and no feature restrictions. If you rely on it commercially, please consider supporting Oxin Studio.

Does it upload my documents anywhere?+
No. The app is fully offline. Your PDFs are processed entirely on your Windows PC. There is no account, no telemetry, and nothing leaves your machine.

Will my annotations be visible in other PDF apps?+
Yes. All annotations are saved as standard PDF annotations, visible in Adobe Acrobat, Edge, Chrome, Preview, and any other PDF viewer.

What does “Edit Text” do?+
Edit Text uses PyMuPDF to detect existing text blocks in the PDF and lets you replace them in place. Scanned (image-only) PDFs cannot be edited this way — OCR is not included.

Windows Defender flags the installer — is it safe?+
This is a SmartScreen warning that appears for newly released, unsigned software. The app does not contain malware. You can verify by building from source — full source code is on GitHub. Click “More info → Run anyway” to proceed.

Is there a Mac version?+
Yes — the Mac edition is a fully native Swift/SwiftUI app built on Apple’s PDFKit. Download Khayyam for Mac →

Why is the installer ~80 MB?+
The installer bundles a self-contained Python runtime and all dependencies (PyQt6, PyMuPDF) so you don’t need to install Python separately. Once installed there is no internet dependency and no further downloads.
