A children’s app that collects absolutely nothing

Most apps aimed at children are quietly instrumented. An analytics SDK here, an advertising identifier there, a crash reporter that phones home with rather more than it needs. Parents are asked to take a privacy policy on trust, and there is usually no way to check.

Meowdy takes a different approach. There is no networking code in the app at all — not a restricted amount, none. Every meow is analysed on the device and discarded within the same second. When your child talks to the cat, speech recognition runs on-device and is forbidden from falling back to a server. Put the phone in Airplane Mode and nothing changes, because nothing ever needed a connection.

Talk to your cat and see what actually landed

Speak or type a message. Meowdy answers with a real recorded meow, pitch-shifted to match your cat’s personality, and shows you how much of your sentence got through.

How it works

1. Name your cat, pick a personality. Takes about fifteen seconds. Meowdy asks for the microphone once and explains why in language a parent can check.
2. Tap the big button. Hold the phone near your cat. Recording stops on its own after a moment of quiet.
3. Meowdy measures the meow. Pitch, length, loudness and rhythm are analysed on the device and sorted into one of seven moods.
4. Your cat says something ridiculous. On screen and out loud, in a voice that matches the personality you chose.

Requirements

The name: Meowdy

Meow, plus howdy. A greeting from a creature that has no intention of greeting you back.

The joke is the whole design brief. Meowdy never claims to decode anything — it measures a real sound, sorts it honestly, and then makes something up with total confidence. Cats do roughly the same to us, and have been getting away with it for about ten thousand years.

Common questions

Does it actually translate my cat?

No, and we would be suspicious of anything claiming to. Meowdy measures real properties of the sound — pitch, length, loudness, number of syllables — matches them to a mood, then picks a line written by a human. Your cat is not really asking about the bins. It will absolutely sound like they are.

Why does it give the same answer twice?

On purpose. The line is chosen from the sound itself rather than at random, so the same meow always produces the same sentence and a different meow produces a different one. The first thing a child does is make the same noise twice — if the answer changed, the illusion would be over in ninety seconds.

Can I fool it with my own voice?

Try it. Adult speech sits around 85–255 Hz and cats sit far above that, so Meowdy will tell you that was not a cat. Nice try.

Is it safe for young children?

Yes. Rated 4+, with no ads, no in-app purchases, no links out of the app, no chat, no accounts and no data collection whatsoever. Every translation is read aloud, so children who cannot read yet get the joke too.

Does it need an internet connection?

Never. Meowdy makes no network requests at all — there is no code in the app capable of making one. It works identically in Airplane Mode, in the car, and on a plane.

Why does it ask for the microphone and speech recognition?

The microphone is how it hears your cat, so that one is required. Speech recognition is optional and only used so the cat can respond to what you actually said rather than just your tone. It runs entirely on your device and can be declined or switched off in Settings — the app works fine without it.

Where do the meow sounds come from?

They are real recorded cats, licensed for use in applications, then pitch-shifted and recombined so each personality has its own voice. Nothing is generated by AI.
