Kilk
A private text and code editor for the Mac
A fast, native Mac editor for code, notes and logs that opens old Persian, Arabic and Chinese files without gibberish, brings your work back after a crash, and never connects to anything.
One purchase, yours to keep. No subscription, no in-app purchases, no account.
Pay once
A text editor that is simply yours.
Most editors now want an account, a monthly fee, or both, for something your Mac has always been able to do on its own.
Kilk is a native Mac app you buy once. It makes no network connections at all: not for licensing, not for updates, not for analytics. Your files stay where you keep them.
Any encoding
Old files, readable again.
A letter saved on an old Windows PC in Persian, a Chinese subtitle file, a Russian log: many editors open these as a screen of gibberish. Kilk recognises the encoding by itself, including Windows-1256, GB18030 and GBK, Big5, Cyrillic, Greek, Hebrew and Turkish, and shows the text as it was written.
If a file ever opens wrong, Reopen with Encoding reads it again the way you choose. You can also save in the encoding the file needs, and Kilk warns you before any character would be lost.
Made for code
What you reach for, and nothing in the way.
Syntax highlighting
About thirty languages, from Swift, Python and JavaScript to Go, Rust, SQL, YAML and Markdown. Colours tuned for light and dark, and quick even on large log files.
Tabs that scale
Open dozens of files in one window. When the tabs run out of room, scroll through them or pick one from the list.
Lines and search
Duplicate, move, delete and join lines. Go to Line, bookmarks in the margin, matching brackets, and the Mac's own find and replace.
Checksums
MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256 and SHA-512 of a selection or the whole file, with one click to copy.
Your work is safe
Nothing you type is lost.
Every few seconds Kilk keeps a private copy of anything you have not saved, on your Mac only. If the app or the Mac stops unexpectedly, the next launch offers to bring it all back.
When another app changes a file you have open, Kilk shows the new version, and asks first if you have edits of your own. Quit, come back, and your files reopen exactly as you left them.
Every language
Written for the whole world.
Type Chinese with Pinyin, Zhuyin or Cangjie, or Japanese and Korean, and nothing flickers while you choose characters: Kilk waits until the text is entered. Lines that mix Chinese and Latin keep the same height, so line numbers stay aligned.
Persian and Arabic read in the right direction. The menus and help are available in English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese and Persian.
