A file opens as gibberish
Kilk detects most encodings by itself, but a very short file or an unusual one can fool any detector. Choose Encoding > Reopen with Encoding and pick the right one; Kilk reads the file from disk again. Japanese (Shift JIS) and Korean (EUC-KR) files are always opened this way, because they are not detected automatically.
What is the difference between choosing an encoding and Reopen with Encoding?
Reopen with Encoding changes how the bytes on disk are read, so the text on screen changes. Choosing an encoding directly from the Encoding menu keeps the text as it is and changes how the file will be saved.
I saved a Persian file as Windows-1256 and some letters changed
That old encoding has no separate slots for the Persian letters ی and ک, so they are saved as the Arabic forms ي and ك, as Windows itself has always done. They look the same in almost every font. To keep them exactly, save in UTF-8.
How do I make Kilk my default text editor?
Select a text file in Finder, choose File > Get Info, pick Kilk under Open with, and click Change All. Kilk also offers to do this the first time you open it.
Kilk quit unexpectedly. Is my work gone?
Probably not. Open Kilk again: if it kept copies of unsaved documents, it lists them and offers to restore them. The copies are made every few seconds and stay on your Mac only.
How do I use Kilk in another language?
Kilk follows your Mac's language. To choose a language for Kilk only, open System Settings > General > Language & Region, and under Applications add Kilk with the language you want.
Does Kilk have plugins, autocomplete or a terminal?
No, and that is on purpose. Kilk is a fast, dependable editor for reading and changing text files, not an IDE. If you need a full development environment, Xcode and others do that job well.
Reporting a bug
Please include your Mac's macOS version, the version of Kilk from Kilk > About Kilk, and what you did just before the problem. If a particular file misbehaves, attaching it (if it is not confidential) helps more than anything else.
