Claybox

1996 — 2026 · Thirty years in clay

A thank-you to a game made by hand.

The Neverhood was built from clay, one frame at a time, and released on 30 October 1996. Thirty years later it still has no equal, but getting it to run on a modern Mac means emulators, settings and the Terminal.

Claybox takes all of that away. Drop in your disc, click Play, and you are back in the Neverhood. It is free, it is open source, and it is our way of saying thank you.

Three steps, no Terminal

Drop in your disc. Click Play.

1 · Add your game

Drop your original CD, or an ISO made from it, onto the Claybox window. Claybox checks that it is The Neverhood and copies the game to your Mac once, so you can put the disc away for good.

2 · Re-sculpt in HD

Claybox starts redrawing the game in HD on your Mac. You don’t have to wait: each scene turns HD as soon as it is ready.

3 · Play

Click Play. The game opens in a window or full screen, and your saved games are kept safely on your Mac.

HD, made on your Mac

The same clay, sharper than ever.

Claybox uses Real-ESRGAN, an AI upscaler, on your Mac’s own graphics chip. Nothing from the game is uploaded, and nothing is downloaded from anywhere. The HD versions are made from your copy, for you.

HD backgrounds

All 259 scenes, redrawn at twice the resolution. About 40 minutes on a recent Mac, once, and you can play while it works.

HD characters

Optional. The animated characters and objects are redrawn too, with smooth, soft edges that sit cleanly on the HD scenes.

HD videos

Optional. All 551 cutscenes, re-sculpted frame by frame. It takes a while and about 3 GB of space, so it is your choice.

Smooth picture

Anything not yet in HD is smoothed for a big screen. Prefer the original pixels? Turn it off.

Free and open

Nothing to buy, nothing to track.

Your own copy

Claybox includes nothing from the game. It plays the original Windows CD of The Neverhood that you own, or an ISO made from it.

Open source

Claybox is free software under the GNU GPL, built on ScummVM, the project that keeps classic adventure games alive. The full source code is public.

Private

No account, no analytics and no network connections while you play or upscale. Your game and your saves stay on your Mac.

Signed by Apple

Claybox is signed and notarized, so it opens without security warnings, the same as an app from the App Store.
