Which version of the game do I need?

The original Windows release of The Neverhood (1996) on CD, or an ISO image made from that CD. Claybox checks the files before it goes on. Claybox does not include or sell the game.

My Mac doesn’t have a CD drive

Make an ISO image of your disc on any computer with a drive, then drop the .iso file onto Claybox. On a Mac with a drive, open Disk Utility and choose File › New Image › Image from the disc. You only need to do this once: Claybox copies the game to your Mac.

Claybox says the disc doesn’t look like The Neverhood

It couldn’t find the game’s DATA folder. Check that it is the original game disc, not a demo or the soundtrack CD. If you copied the files by hand, choose the folder that contains DATA.

Does Claybox work on an Intel Mac?

No. Claybox needs a Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or later) and macOS 14 or later. The HD upscaling relies on the graphics chip in Apple silicon.

My Mac gets warm while HD is being made

That is normal: the graphics chip is working hard. Keep a laptop plugged in. Only one HD job runs at a time, and it stops when it is done. You only make the HD files once.

How do I save, load or quit the game?

Press Esc for the game’s own menu. Option-Return switches between full screen and a window, and ⌘Q quits the game and takes you back to Claybox.

The game opens and closes straight away

Try turning off HD backgrounds in Claybox and clicking Play again. If it still closes, choose Help › Show Engine Log and send us that file.

Reporting a bug

Please include your Mac model, the macOS version, the version of Claybox from the About window, and what you did just before the problem. The engine log (Help › Show Engine Log) helps more than anything else.
